Scavenging To Make A One-Of-A-Kind Pillow

I pick up items everyday from 

where I wander looking for elements

 for pillows.

I found this vintage needlepoint

 on eBay and the fabrics were

 pieces from my goods.

First, I start to pull pieces and measure and

 lay them out to make sure I have

 enough to do a pillow that will be 

sized right in scale with 

the needlepoint.

Pulling from my inventory boxes

 I try different fabrics,

colors and sizes of trim that

 will work with the needlepoint colors.

One of my attractions to this needlepoint

 was the date and initials

 of the person

who did the hand work on it.

This is the fun part for me...

the gathering and putting together of

all the pieces.

Here is the finished pillow and I know

that I will find the right

home for it when I list it

on eBay with a starting bid of $95.00.

 This became a one of a kind a pillow

 that I know someone will

admire for years to come.

Revitalizing a Moroccan Textile

I stopped into one of my favorite

shops on Antique Row 
last week, 

Cashmere Buffalo.

Charlene Goldstein, the shop owner, loves

textiles and has a following of designers

who have clients who crave

ethnic pillows.

She asked me if I would re-work

 a recent find for her.

It was in very bad shape, but

look how a bit of attention 
made it shine.

I bought this fringe trim about

30 years ago in France and 

have been waiting for just

the right pillow to use it on.

 

Don't pass by a textile that winks at you

 no matter the size or the shape it is in.
They all have life left in them.

Dana Aichler Pillow Maker Extraordinaire

When you are in the pillow design business 
you are a lover of textiles.

Probably to the point of distraction and

when you find someone with that same passion,

 that is usually the topic of conversation
 when you run into each other.

I became fast friends with Dana Aichler when

 we both would hoover

over the same pile of textiles at sales

and markets around Texas.

Sometimes we would reach for the same 

piece and it was not unusual for 

us to buy goods from each other.

I learned that she and her mother

 owned a fabulous shop,

Twenty Six Twenty,

 in Houston that carried her pillows.

I was new in town in the 90's

 and I went to check them out...

Well, they were fabulous and

just get more luscious with each

new batch.

Basically, when you are doing antique pillows

you work with fragments, pieces and

tiny embellishments that have survived.

It takes months to find all the elements

that make each pillow so subtle yet

powerful in a room.

These are pillows that don't go into 

a family room. Any person with

an eye will know from 50 feet

if they are the "real" deal.

 They are what designers look

for when doing the final touches on a project.

You pass them along to your eldest daughter who

knows that they are very special.
